His father, John Sims Sr., was a tap dancer, while his mother, Kate Haley, performed as a singer. Growing up in a musical household, Sims was drawn to music from a young age, learning to play the drums and clarinet.

Sims was heavily influenced by Lester Young, a renowned tenor saxophonist. Inspired by Young's style, Sims developed a unique and expressive approach to tenor saxophone.
