Early Life

Helen Lorraine Cook was born in 1936. She grew up as part of a middle-income family in a small mid-western town where her parents taught her the value of hard work and goal setting. Although she was a shy child, she was most content when she focused on others. A learning experience that has guided her throughout her life occurred when she was very young. A classmate told her that she was poor because she did not live in town, and her mother made the clothes she wore.
